Three buses set on fire in capital’s Matuail, Shyamoli

Unidentified people set fire to two buses at separate places in Matuail area in Dhaka and another bus was set on fire during a procession of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party at Shyamoli in Dhaka on Saturday.

No casualty was reported so far.

 

The first fire at Matuail was reported at about 12:30pm while the second one was reported in the area at about 1:30pm. The fire at Shyamoli fire was reported later.

The news of setting fire to the buses came on the day when the opposition political parties had been observing sit-in programmes at different Dhaka entry points and the agitation programmes were came under attack by the police and the ruling Awami League activists.

‘We received the news that a bus was set on fire at Matuail at 12:30pm,’ said Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarter’ control room duty officer Lima Khanam.

Two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and doused the fire, she said.

She said that they were not aware about the persons who set fire to the bus.

Another parked bus was set on fire by unidentified people near a fuel refilling station at Matuail area at about 1:30pm, New Age staff photojournalist reported from the spot, quoting eyewitnesses.

At Shyamoli, two police cars were vandalized and a bus was set on fire on Saturday afternoon.

Rubaiyat Zaman, an additional deputy commissioner of DMP Tejgaon zone, told New Age that two police cars were vandalised from a sudden procession of BNP while another bus of Welcome Paribahan were set on fire.

He said that some of their force members were injured and police detained several people.

Their identities are being scrutinized, ADC Zaman said.

He said that around 300 BNP leaders and activists brought out a procession and they vandalised and torched several vehicles.
